Taken For A Ride

Imagine a manager who pressures you to work more, manipulates your hourly earnings, pays people differently for the same job, and raises the sales quota for earning a bonus whenever you come close to reaching it. This is the reality for many ride-share drivers on Uber and Lyft.
Taken For A Ride (demystifying-gigwork.com) covers the technologies that harm workers' pay and well being, plus a data tool that calculates the hidden costs of driving for Lyft and Uber.

The Context

More people are turning to gig work to earn a living. According to Pew Research’s 2021 Report, 16% of Americans have engaged in online gig work and 58% of active gig workers rely on this income for basic needs. Despite this, the technologies that determine their schedules and wages remain unregulated and secretive. What's the impact of these unchecked technologies and what does that mean for everyone?

Angie Zhang and several researchers studied and investigated this topic through the lens of algorithmic management of gig workers for Uber and Lyft. They interviewed drivers, policy makers, and worker right advocators. This website project (demystifying-gigwork.com) distills 70+ pages of their research and a ride-share worker data tool into one responsive web page.
